Morons of Malayalam Cinema

Recently the Film Chamber, which is unrelated to the 36th chamber of Shaolin, declared new behavourial rules for film actors. As per the new rules actors and singers should not participate in TV shows as participants or judges. Also the stars have been banned from appearing in award shows. If anyone violates these rules they will be banned from films. They have also added a humane clause. If anyone wants to attend functions, they have to ask Film Chamber’s permission. If Film Chamber likes you, you can go. Else you will have to sit at home and watch Idea Star Singer Season 4, 400th stage.
The reason why the Film Chamber has resorted to such draconian measures is because Malayalam cinema and Somalian economy have similar growth rate. The goal is to make it atleast as good as Afghanistan’s economy. The chamber thinks if this strategy does not boost Malayalam cinema, nothing will.
In our opinion, these rules are not good enough. Though we appreciate the dark humor in preventing film stars from attending award functions, created only for giving awards to film stars, we think the school headmaster can do more
First, the stars should not just be prevented from appearing in TV serials. They should be prevented from watching TV shows in their homes. For this the Film Chamber should employ people who will monitor the actors for violation. We suggest CITU workers who have experience with Nokku Kooli for this. Now for example, Mammotty is going on one month vacation to USA. He can watch TV there. The Film Chamber should send a chaperone along with him to make sure he complies.
Second, there should be no talking in the sets. We feel some actors have been disparaging the bold steps taken by the Film Chamber and so there should be complete silence on the sets. The actors should speak only the approved lines. If they have to speak anything else, the lines have to be submitted to the Film Chamber, 3 days in advance for review. Thus if Thilakan wants to abuse AMMA, it has to be from a Film Chamber approved script.
If these steps were enforced earlier, then the super hits of 2010 would be Senior Mandrake, Drona 2010, Cheriya Kallanum Valiya Policeum, Nanthuni, Kausthubham and Valiyangadi. We missed that golden opportunity, but it is not too late.

  1. Malayalam film industry is hurtling towards oblivion. It needs no enemy other its own brethren. The most outrageous among the new developments is the chamber’s stance against other language films. This smacks of paranoia, prejudice and utter diffidence in their own products. Once they are done abusing and sabotaging each other, let the members of the industry take some time out to think about the quality of their output. Maybe some good will come of it.

  2. “If they have to speak anything else, the lines have to be submitted to the Film Chamber, 3 days in advance for review.”

you forgot that the form has to be filled in triplicate, and attested by a gazetted officer.. :-p

in all seriousness, though, W. T. F? i agree with bala above.. the only message we get from the producers is one of insecurity and a lack of confidence..

and this is what i don’t get about the producers, most of all.. i understand that they want their movies to make money.. does it then not make sense to finance a solid script and a good director, instead of making another by-the-numbers movie with the same old script templates and simply hoping to get lucky at the box office?

  3. Can’t really understand the producer’s thoughts here;do they think as audience we go theaters to see the actors only and not the film.Only under 10 percentage of films produced in industry are watchable to say the least;the producers have nothing to say about this. And that is the main and perhaps the only reason for the failure of the industry. And if they think that preventing Mukesh,MG Sreekumar,Jagadeesh ,M & M etc from coming in tv shows will make people rush to the theaters then God save these genius producers.

  4. If only someone took the initiative of creating a parallel cinema medium minus all the associations and chambers and dungeons where movies are made for the sake of cinema as an art, but then there would be no producers. And what would be Kerala without unions!
