Malayalam cinema lost one of its finest today. Lohithadas passed away due to a massive heart attack in Kochi at around 10:50AM. Lohithadas, who pennned many masterpieces was also one of the last links between our cinema and its past glory. He was also our last hopes to regain lost glory.
His scripts created some of the best movies and finest characters in Malayalam cinema. Script writer, director, song writer … Lohitha Das shone is all these roles. Thaniyavathanam, Kireedom, His Highness Abdulla, Amaram, Sallapam … a long list of movies having well etched characters.
In an era where movies flood theatres, cashing on collective amnesia of viewers and disappear into oblivion faster, Lohi’s characters have stood the test of time. In a career spanning 22 years, Lohithadas wrote 44 scripts and directed 11 movies.
Here is Sibi Malayail and Lohithadas talking about Kireedam and other movies.
PS: On a personal note – Last year this time we were fortunate spend few weeks with Lohithadas. A gentleman, a caring person and nice sense of humour. What stood apart was his deep knowledge on various subjects.

after MT, padamarajan and bharathan, he had carried forward their legacies. and his movies did not have any item numbers, foreign locations or huge budgets – simple stories focussed on individuals – be it balan maash, sethumadhavan, kalloor gopinath, ananthan, raveendran, roy etc and all very realistic and portrayed by the finest actors in malayalam.
he gave Manju, Meera and bhama to mollywood.
an irreplacable loss to malayalam.

Hi,
Its a big loss for Malayalees- A terrific writer. Thaniyavarthanam and Kireedom arguably had the best scripts in the history of Malayalam cinema.May his soul rest in peace.

The picture of him in the coffin reminded one so much of Director Bharathan. His characters and movies will remain as an eternal nostalgia for Malayalam movie lovers.
Maybe God wants him up there – to make movies with Bharathan and Padmarajan for the ‘heavenly’ audience. Just the thought is worth dying!

Big loss for malayalis..Its amazing how many classic movies have scripts that are the work of this man; Thaniyavarthanam, Dasharatham, Bharatham, Kireedom, Mudra, Amaram, Valtsalyam, etc.
its amazing how different malayalam cinema would have turned out to be if it werent for Lohithdas and the incredible movies that were made with his scripts
