One of the biggest hits in Malayalam, Katha Parayumbol, got remade in Tamil as Kuselan. With Rajni acting in the movie, the complexion of the movie changed, so did it’s fate at the box office. The movie tanked, a rare occurance for a Rajni Film. The movie’s performance at box office invited lot of comments and protests. Some of the comments were interesting, Here’s what Jayaram had to say:

When talking about the current remake trend in the industry, the actor said that while remaking old classics, care should be taken to retain the original flavor. He also added that he is acting in the remake of old classic ‘Kadalikka Neramillai’. He further says, “When Tamil films get dubbed into Malayalam, it runs successfully but the same cannot be said for Malayalam films. But the recently released Kuselan was better in Tamil than in the original Malayalam Katha Parayumbol and the credit should go to the entire team.”

And here’s how Mohanlal reacted:

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has opined that Kuselan’s failure is due to Rajini’s guest appearance. According to the actor, Kuselan did not do well because Rajini has developed an image and people refused to accept him if that is not satisfied. Mohanlal said that he Amitabh Bachchan, Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have all etched out an image and that is the reason people refuse to accept them if they try to experiment.

That Shows why one guys is still a superstar and other was a superstar!

  1. Vinay says:

Rajni fans (read around 90% of Tamilians), want to watch him from the first frame to the last. Unfortuntately P Vasu coulndt do any story change to show Rajni from first to last. If Chandramukhi was taken with Rajni appearing at the half way ala Mohan Lal, even Chandramukhi might have met the same fate. Else Rajni should have enacted the barber role which again Tamilians will find difficult to accept him as a Barber cannot bash up 100 goons and barber cannot dance with Nayantara.

And to add to that, introducing Nayantara for a “kuli scene” song, Vadivelu for cheap double entendres and all such nonsense contributed to the movie’s flop.

Serves P Vasu right. And a certain king of remakes is watching all this and laughing quietly.

  3. hats off to renjith for treading a less travelled road.multilayered content, relevant form and a wise critique on our film industry.the tragic dilemma of malu cant be better expressed poignantly within the boundaries of our existing malayalam filmlovers psyche and market dictates.
but there r points to differ.the shot with malu and anup juxtaposed with akki and his love lingers for the wrong reasons.this is a case of ethical visual slippage.why should these romantic shots be juxtaposed.this is to equate the avant garde akkis romance with the romance of the actor/actress.this is wrong visual phrasing not to be expected from renjith.
also the reference to french fim kisses which are how they should be,. can anyone claim thirakkatha is on par with day for night and 8 and a half -2 films of the same genre.also, sharath has done a good job insinuating film periods with compatible music.however renjith fails to make ceative use of the music,
lastly due to market compulsions renjith has to agree to use srividyas image in posters,.but his alter ego akki refuses to film the actresses story.
for the oblique references to malayalam superstars require congrats.
