We had great expectations for Sibi Malayil’s come back movie, but he seems to have lost sense of cinema during the time he was off. How else do you explain the fact that he agreed to direct such a movie, which is losely based on Manichithathazhu in which Sibi himself worked? The reviewers unanimously agree that this movie is torture and Mohanlal’s failure streak continues.
The plot, even though half baked, is little appealing but it is the screenplay and the dialogues that proved to be the biggest negatives of the film. The director, Sibi Malayil and the scriptwriter s Bhasurachandran has miserably failed to make the film an engrossing affair, as the first half with cliched sequences is a little dragging with none of the sequences inviting our interest. Instead of shooting in different unexplored locations and dressing up your lead stars in the best of costumes, the makers could have looked for a better contrived plot. The film’s graph climbs up only after Siddhique, as the circle inspector, makes his appearance in its later half and there after the film takes the plight of an investigative thriller than the intended psychological thriller.
Half way through, the audiences are left wondering where this film is heading for. No one knows, and no one cares as half the full house theatre was empty by the time it was over. Mithun Madhavan, the Mohanlal character appears 35 minutes after the film starts and just like in Manichitrathazhu makes a dramatic and comic appearance in black like a Sabarimala pilgrim. And why did the director and his script writer show Mohanlal as ‘man for all seasons’- an IT professional, a magician, a Kalaripayattu expert, when he is supposed to be a renowned psychiatrist?
After the film was over, we wonder- “Does Mohanlal ever read the script of a film that he does?†Unfortunately Flash is a proof that he does not, as the film drives us crazy and is not a wonderful experience after 2 hours and 42 minutes!
Paresh Palicha attempts something of an analysis which seems as pathetic as the movie itself.
Mohanlal tries to be charming by making exaggerated movements of his hands, as if trying to hypnotise the audience into liking what is going on the screen. But he
clearly does not succeed.Paravathi has screen presence. With the gamut of emotions she has to display, she looks surprisingly convincingly.
No other actor has anything worthwhile to write about. Even the veteran Jagathy Sreekumar, wearing a weird wig, is reduced a character reminiscent of his role in Hallo.
It is hard to believe that Flash is the work of the talented Siby Malayil. The film is a huge letdown.

I read all reviews on “flash”. After watching the film, I think most reviews (written on it) were not matter-of -fact. The film is not bad. Instead, I found it very interesting. The director successfully maintains an air of mystery throuhout the film and keeps the viewer glued to the screen. The film begins slowly but gradually gains momentum and reaches its peak in the impressive climax.songs are the only weakpoint of the film. The comparison with “Manichithrathazhu” is not fair. Both films are Psychic thrillers & the entry of Mohanlal in both films is similar. Apart from this, “flash” has nothing to do with the latter.Siby Malayil has done away with slapstics and heroisms. It is sad that critics are targetting bold attempts like “flash”instead of promoting them. They write good about trashes ‘rock&roll’& ‘Chocolates’.It is a dangerous trend that will never help mollywood industry to rise above mediocrity. readers…don’t be cheated by these hypocrites. I sweare ‘flash’ is a refreshing film worth watching . But don’t expect slap-humour & heroic utterances & noisy fights .
Saw flash today. A very very boring film. Dont even insult Manichitrathaazhu by comparing it to Flash. A stupid story with insipid performances .
Siby has lost his mojo.
As a reader who has had the misfortune of watching Flash, I am sorry to say that I believe those critics than you, Mr.Jayacritic. Your outburst reeks of something real lethal, for Flash is a hell of a boring film that is a sure test on the audience’s patience. If you found it “very interesting”, I seriously suggest you seek medical help as well, aka the heroine of this film..
Flash isnt a ‘bold’ attempt, its bald rather. Dont display your inanity here, by coming up with ridiculous support props like these for a film, that was best left rotting in the cans!
Sibi is now trying to blame mohanlal fans for the film flaws. Lal had commented earlier the script had been in treatment over 2 years. But there is no magic. Writer’s debut movie and he played bad.
sajeev, What is the point in blaming mohanlal fans. Did they write the script?
i feel pity to those who say flash is a boring film.its really a suspense thriller.sibi showed his class.film was going slowly till lalettan s entrance.after that it gained pace.second half was a good thrilling experience and the climax was very different and sibi moulded it very well.film had many superb sequences like kalari scenes between lal and that old man. malayalis can only accept low standard comedy films and not class films, as before
This is the worst movie by Sibi…I couldn’t sit and watch the entire movie….Boring in all the sense…Better Lal reads the script before accepting the stupid stuff.
Analyser,
It would be of great service to the common man, if you could put up a list of other ‘class’ films as Flash. We could atleast make sure that we maintain a respectable distance from the others as well. Thanks.
Vinu, I think analyzer is Bhasurachandran himself.
Unbelievable, some one with a basic literacy to participatein this forum would call FLASH a class film! Analyser, please get your head examined.
Jibs,
I couldnt agree more!!
hey guys,
can you people please put up some movies of 2007 that you liked the most.atleast i can know about you people more.its serious.
TO
vinu,renjith
analyzer,
for me the best movies of 2007 were arabikatha and katha parayumbol.for entertainment, chocolate was good. the worst movie was flash.
katha parayumbol
ore kadal
arabikatha
not necessarily in that order made sense to me.
seems that it is from lal jose and sreenivasan we can expect good stuff since they go for good stories. lal jose realized his track with failures of “pattalam” and ” rasikan”. Sreeni has been in the right track ab initio. His discs also slip some time.”bhargava charitham moonam khandam” for eg.
I saw flash, and compared to the other crap that has came out in this genre in malayalam films, this was one of the better ones. The first hour of the film was very boring and very slow paced. I also found the heroin annoying to watch. If it continued at this pace I would agree with the majority of reviewers. But I felt their was a lot of mystery in the second half and kept the me interested and not completely predictable a stark contrast from most malayalam films the last decade.
