Just One Tamil Movie

She never said she would not act in Tamil or Telugu but would do it only when the right chance came. When comedy king Siddique (of Siddique-Lal) called her to act in his Tamil movie Saadhu Mirandal, she was more than happy. Then you cannot really call it a Tamil movie for the people behind the camera were all Malayalees, the movie was filmed in Kochi and the music was by Deepak Dev. For the movie Kavya sports a slim new look very different from her looks in Malayalam films.

Usually these movies are like the camel in the tent thing. Actresses uses one such movie as a stepping stool and before you know they are dancing with Ajith, Vijay and Rajnikanth in absurd movies in colorful dresses. We had asked once, if Kavya would speak Tamil and the answer seems to be, “Not often”. She is back in Malayalam with a few more movies.

She said in one interview that she is not interested in run off the mill roles, but then she will be seen in Kangaroo which is not an intellectually challenging movie as far as we can say. Then if you have decided to stick with Malayalam what options do you have? Both Ms are acting with heroines younger than her and even Dileep is trying that route. That leaves her only with Prithviraj and he is busy in Tamil as well doing only few movies in Malayalam.

It is hard for a heroine to get movies which show her acting skills in Malayalam. Adoor makes movies once in a while and they are mostly meant for film festivals. Ranjith and Kamal tried a few movies and they too seem to have given up. Now a new director, P. Sukuram has cast her as the lead in a movie called Kalabhamazha which claims to have a female oriented script. We think such movies are a hard sell considering the fate of movies like Annorikkal and Gauri Shankaram. Eventually, it has to be just run of the mill movies for survival.

  1. Really sad, verey sad that finally a good, promising and soon-to-be-superstar like Prithviraj is stuck with this Kavya. I just don’t understand, why OLD heroes like M&M never repeat thier heroins but it is alway repeat for young heroes. Kavya looks a little old for Prithviraj, she has to watch her weight and also improve her dress sense. She seems to be a lazy person, will not reduce her weight (in some movies she looks older than Kajol & Maduri) – and looks too matured for young heroes. Is is disgusting to read this article. She is a GOOD actress but has to stop talking rubbish like she will not accept run-of-the-mill roles – heehee – what type of role is she doing in Kangaru – maybe she needs improvment with her English language TOO …

  2. SS, soon-to-be-superstar? Who? Didn’t you read the astrology from the experts here. According to them he will be a superstar when he is 60 years old.

  3. oh, pls, Kavya isn’t even going to cause a small scratch in tamil movies. She ought to first fit into a frame like nayantara finally learnt. Till then KAvya can only act in tamil movies with malayalam crew.

  4. LOL jibs, that was a good one.

Even if Prithviraj gives back to back superhits in Malayalam, he’ll not qualify as a superstar for these uncle fans because, for them Prithvi should have first played miniscule sidekick roles to the Superstars. Also, he should act in movies without reading the script and make it a blockbuster without the help of co-stars, only then it can be counted as a Solo hit!!

  5. sudar, In an interview I saw kavya saying she does not want even to cause a small scratch in tamil movies, she just wanted to act in siddique’s movie that’s all. so that is one less worry for you. second, i am not a doctor, but i think you need an eye checkup. you should take a pic of kavya in runway and the latest tamil film and see if the she has slimmed down. either way, what is this obsession with slim actresses?

  6. Jibs – there is no obsession with slim actresses. Kavya is a very GOOD actress, but just doesn’t fit well with dresses she wears, maybe she needs a better dress designer and start looking for roles were she can act, talk more sense in the interviews, like she will not act in “RUN-OF-MILL” roles. Her pairing with Prithvi is a little stale and SHE DOES LOOK OLDER THAN prithvi.

  7. @Jibs:
I take the risk of getting it wrong by assuming that your reference on expert Astrology above was on my comment.

Let me make my point clear to you. I do not have anything against Prithvi or against any of the senior or junior performers in the industry.

I read that you preferred to watch the movies of stars of your age alone. If so, you would certainly have ample movies to watch now, going by the promise that Prithviraj has shown. But then, keeping ‘actors of your age’ as the criteria may not be the right way to put it. In that case you would always be watching the movies of the same stars alone and when you are sixty you should be lucky enough to have performers of your age still going strong. I understand that you prefer watching young stars in young roles but that idea did not appear to be coming through. I just tried to put it in a light-hearted message which unfortunately ended up as a provocative one. The mistake is mine. I apologize.

I would not mind criticizing you (just like below :-)) but I would like to keep that short of leaving a bad taste in your mouth.

Your question: “…What is the obsession with the slim actresses?”
Well then, tell me, what is the obsession with young actors? Its all about one’s preferences, right?

  8. @Hariz:

It is obvious that fans of existing stars will not accept a new person coming up. However, this is not a case of worry as fans form just one portion of the audience and true talent together with sincere effort can never be kept low for long.

Nevertheless, I beg to differ from your hint that superstars (always) don’t read their scripts or try to contribute to Good Cinema while Prithvi does.

Take the example of some of Mammootty’s movies in the last couple of years: Kadha Parayumbol, Ore Kadal, Mission 90 Days, Palunku, Kaiyoppu, or Karutha Pakshikal. Everyone may not have liked every one of them, but then, nobody can deny the fact that they were all attempts to good cinema and also succeeded at least moderately in those attempts. And if you take the percentage, no other superstars except for Lal in 80s and 90s have contributed that much for the medium.

Surely, you can’t claim that the movies that Prithvi has done in the last few months were always an attempt to good cinema. 90% of his movies off late are forgettable. I too hope that more of Akale and Daivanamathil, Vasthavam and Classmates, and also Chocolate (entertainment is also a virtue of cinema as much as artistic quality is) happen.. for the mutual growth of him and of the Industry.

Perhaps, he will be able to contribute more in this sense, once he gets settled as a star.

  9. @Vinod

by saying “without reading the script”, i meant movies like Alibhai, Rock n Roll, Flash, Pothen Vava, Thaskaraveeran, Bhargavacharitham etc.

Yes indeed, Mammootty has a better script sense nowadays compared to Mohanlal.

Prithviraj’s 90% of movies off late are forgettable???

    thats news to me.

The movies he’s done in the last two years are way better than what others in the industry are doing.

The only forgettable ones are Khakee & Avan Chandiyude Makan. Even Kangaroo is a mediocre affair. but the remaining ones are good, though all of them may not have been commercially successful. Not to forget he’s had 3 blockbusters in the last 2 years.(Classmates, Mozhi & Chocolate)

  10. Vinod, You wrote

That was exactly what I was trying to say, but the message got lost in translation. I wish the M&M’s acted their age in much serious roles instead of trying to cover the entire wide spectrum of human life. The best example now is Amithabh Bachchan.

  11. Obsession with slimness – fat is definitely not my idea of beauty. Regarding KAvya acting well, i think an actor/actress has to be both eye candy and do justice to the movies they do.

I just don’t see kavya having any chance outside Malayalm industry not even in bhojpuri.

Thankfully producers don’t need your permission to do various things like for example this:

Before making blanket stamements, some amount of browsing/googling would help

  13. “think an actor/actress has to be both eye candy and do justice to the movies they do.”

Srinivasan is not eye candy, but he has been doing justice to all the roles he has been given.

  14. I see there has been attempts to fit in the frame, just like I had said before.

Currently, Asin and Trisha are the real female stars in Tamil industry as in crowd pullers by themselves. Nayantara is def. a force to reckon after her billa looks.

Even Bhavna inspite of her hits is still treated as the girl next door. All these are just for the statement which said – ‘growing fans’ Between, has there been a film of hers released before? growing fans it seems…

Ps: i loved kavya in perumezhukam, it is jsut that i haven’t seen her in any avataar where the hero would fall in love with her at first sight. if she slims down, then let us see..

  15. Most of this Kavya supporterers are Prithviraj fans..any conections..LOL!

Dude..all this stuffs are written by people like us..
    not a reliable source

btw did u see any new movie of kavya in tamil telugu..kannada or hindi..huh??
oh..i got it..she turned to be selective..well a good movie!!!

  17. Aishu,

once again, Before making blanket stamements, some amount of browsing/googling would help

  18. Jibs – Kavya’s comments in the link you had provided merely says that she woulndt try out glamour roles. where does it say that she woulndt act in telugu or tamil. she just mentions that she would be choosy. There are good movies in both languages (Happy days, Veyil etc) that dont need glamour. She could have been referring to those

  19. I dont see why theres so much antagonism against Kavya. Shes pretty, acts well, steers clear of controversies and minds her own business. And I agree with Jibz that she has slimmed down and looks wow in Sadhu Mirandal.

  20. @Krishnan, maybe she got only offers to act in glamorous roles. Maybe the producer of Veyil did not call her..we don’t know right..so we can only go by what she said.

  21. “we don’t know right..so we can only go by what she said. ” – Precisely. So where has she said that she wouldnt act in tamil or telugu

  22. @krishnan, She said she would act in Telugu and Tamil. In one interview on Asianet she said she wanted to act only in Siddique’s movie. Then in another interview she said she is no opposed to any language. I think both these interviews are there on youtube.
