So who the hell is Meera Jasmine to say she can’t do Blessy’s rehearsal camp?
This is the question Moviebuzz has in an article titled Meera’s misdemeanors. Director Blessy conducts workshops for his actors before each movie in which rehersal’s are conducted and Meera refused to attend the camp for the new film Kolkotta News and hence Moviebuzz’s outrage.
The argument given against Meera is mostly juvenile. It says that it was Blessy who introduced Meera to Lohithadas and so when Blessy demands something, Meera has to obey. This kind of logic assumes that due to this obligation, Meera has to subservient to Blessy all her life and her present status or individuality does not matter. The present day Meera is not the same Meera Blessy saw many years back. If you need respect, you have to respect others and that is a lesson Blessy has to learn.
That said, if a director calls for a camp and all the actors including Mammotty attend it, there is no excuse for not attending. Yes, sometimes your true emotions may come only when the camera is rolling, but it helps the rest of the cast members. More than that it is just professionalism.
So the question troubling our mind is: If Meera Jasmine didn’t comply to Blessy style of film making, why didn’t Blessy fire her and sign up some other talented actress? Unlike what we would like to believe, talent is becoming a rare commodity, especially when it comes to Malayalee actresses. Moreover, the directors have to pick and choose from the export left overs. We are sure that Blessy understood this bitter truth and swallowed his pride and complied with Meera’s mood swings and tantrums.

I don’t understand this statement. The Sify article does not say that Blessy accused Meera for not respecting him. The director is the person who is responsible for making a good film (or a successful film) so it is his responsibility to make sure everything falls in place. The rehearsal camp shows Blessy’s dedication to his work and perfection. As we know his movies have proved that his methods have produced good results so far (am not suggesting that everyone should follow this, each director might have their own ways to work).
In the current Malayalam film industry where the shooting gets finished even before a completed script [;-)], Blessy needs a huge appreciation.
Meera is a fine actress, perhaps one of the finest. No doubt. But delaying shooting schedules, ignoring the director’s dedication towards his work etc is not at all good for a professional actress.

But why single out meera? Every one of these so called ’superstars’ throws their own kind of tantrums. dileep, for example is notorious for interfering in the script and downsizing directors. There should be ageneral code of conduct for the ’stars’

Apparently Mohanlal also does not like to rehearse before shooting begins. In an interview with ManoramaTV (available on YouTube), he says that he likes to be spontaneous and not studied.
Artists everywhere throw tantrums. It’s a part of their nature. It is precisely their inability to control their emotions that we love. It is cruel for us to say that when the director says “cut” they should just turn off the switch. We know from our personal lives that emotions can’t be “switched off”.
In an interview Manoj K. Jayan said that on the set of “Sallapam”, Manju Warrier got so into character that she actually fought him hard when he tried to stop her from jumping in front of the train. Then when the director said “cut” she just broke down and cried. She also caused havoc when she ran off with someone during the shoot. And remember Shobha? Is it a coincidence that Manju, Shobha, and Meera are the best actresses that Malayalam cinema has ever produced?
We don’t know what these people face emotionally off screen. We pay the price of the ticket, enjoy watching them bare their souls, then turn around and play moral police.

The media wants to create gossips and Meera gets the most blame from so called Madras Mallu media…She is one of the finest actresses we ever got in Malayalam…Other than Manju and Urvashi I didn’t see any one else who is so spontaneous and expressive in Malayalam movie industry.Meera has her own issues…Mainly family issues and she is so moody and acts so depressed and isolated some times.Hope Blessy comes up with another great movie for us.

I would pardon anything from Meera after having watched her out of the world perfomance in Ore kadal. How did the director shyamaprasad managed to get such outstanding performance form two such difficult perfomers while the other directors are huffing and puffing!?

There is a video interview with Meera on webindia123.com where she is asked about her tantrums. She admits that she has wild mood swings, but she feels that it is an asset for an artist. She says that she is expected to forget all her personal problems when she is on the set, that her suppressed emotions are bound to come out at some time, in some form.
She is a very young girl, without family support, trying to stay afloat in an industry known for ill treating actresses. And I think she’s doing a damn good job.
