Review roundup: Nadiya Kollapetta Rathri

Another movie from Suresh Gopi crime thriller movie factory. This time he has K.Madhu as director. But looks like this one will also face the same fate as the previous ones of similar genre in the box office.

Velu comments:

There’s a good amount of detail to the investigation, a device that can often be done and redone over and over again in movies like this. It’s intriguing to see where all of the false evidence leads, but it gets a bit too tiring on the neck after a while. The script is laden with typical cop genre clichés. Apart from being plausible, predictable and ponderous, the plot soon degenerates into rampant contortions that are at once contrived and illogical, if not severely inane. I would consider it a real big surprise if it still manages to hold your interest after the initial hullabaloo that quite unfortunately staggers to nowhere land. The chief problem is that there’s very little mystery to this mystery. For the thriller connoisseur, the climax is spotted a mile off. The story offers so many lapses in common sense, so many plot holes and so much dialogue to howl for that there’s plenty to talk about afterward. What the film lacks is a surmise, surprise and suspense. This is a snoozy, slack stumper that smells of a sluggish and sloppy predicament.

Rediff.com says:

Meanwhile, there are glitches galore in the narrative as some of the loose ends are not tied up convincingly. In the end, Suresh Gopi tells the original culprit to confess. But, there are still some glaring inconsistencies that leave us numb.It is likely that K Madhu’s intention was to make a serious version of No: 20 Madras Mail (a blockbuster made in the mid-eighties that set the trend of crime thrillers in Malayalam). But his attempt leaves us with a craving to see the former once again.

IndiaGlitz’s verdict:

The novelty of the film is definitely that there are three murders committed on a single night on a train, of which the victims are in no way related. The script is tight, with most ends tied up. Though the fake blood, some overdone dramatic sequences in the first half, and the super star mostly as a one man dialogue presenter looks foul, the overall production is slick. Shots of trains, top angle shots of moving express trains sprinkled all over creates the atmosphere of urgency. Snappy editing and quick-paced action help take the tension to a feverish pitch. Interspersed with the frantic chases are moments of relief provided by Suraj as the TT and Anoop as the A C attender.

Suresh Gopi as Sharafuddin Tharamasi does not seem fresh, because he has been doing such roles far too often, but the character is safe in his hands. Whatever its antecedents, this is just another cleverly packaged one-man show for him. The entire story is designed to suit his energetic style of acting as he infuses the drama with tremendous anxiety, particularly in the first half, with his edgy body language

Nowrunning.com seems to be confused as to what to say:

Suresh Gopi as Sharafuddin Tharamasi has done a good job. He has given life to the character. But there does not seem to be much freshness about him, his performance or his appearance. It may be because he has been doing such roles far too often. Though there is nothing outstanding about his performance, he has lent credibility to the role and done it in his own style. The film is good but not outstanding and could even prove disappointing. It is likely to be dismissed as just another thriller, though a well-made one. The novelty is that there are three murders committed on a single night on a train, and the victims are in no way related.

  1. Objection Rediff; Madras mail was a block buster? was it the starting of Crime thriller in Malayalam? I am afraid no one will consider the movie as a crime thriller as there is much to laugh (first half) less to thrill.Where stays NewDelhi,Indrajalam kind of movies released long before. Reviewer is trying to compare on Train, it is pathetic.
