P.Bhaskaran, multifaceted talent, passed away yesterday. He was 83, died on Sunday afternoon after complaining of chest pain. P.Bhaskaran had made his mark as poet, lyricist and director and had won many National Awards.

One of the few in Malayalam to combine literary and directorial skills, his contributions to both aspects of filmmaking have been equally outstanding. Yet, his songs, with their special stamp of colloquial diction and lyrical charm, are an inseparable ingredient of Malayali consciounesness.

The first from Malayalam to win the President’s Medal for excellence in filmmaking, for Neelakkuyil in 1954, Bhaskaran `Master’ was a dominant presence in Malayalam cinema for nearly three-and-a-half decades. He directed 50 films. He penned over 3,000 film songs, beginning with a few lines for S.S. Vasan’s Tamil film Apoorvasahodararkal in 1949. [Lyricist-filmmaker P. Bhaskaran dead]

  1. Surprising our so called ‘Internet music wizards’ doesn’t have anything to comment about the demise of Bhaskaran mashu. Even a copycat Deepak Dev elicits more feedback!

  2. Some times it is hard to express your feeling under such circumstances.

It is sad, a great loss and difficult to write a feedback that might do justice to his achievements.

I have seen his films, studied his poetry in school and listen to his music even to this day. In my mind P.Bhaskaran epitomizes a sense of purity, a youthfulness in his thinking (I don’t know if you guys remember “Arakkallan Mukkalkallan”, hilarious period drama) decency and devotion. I miss him a lot, blessed are malayalees for having a great soul like him among us to entertain and educate for a time.
