The period of youth is turbulent and comes with a rebellious streak – Going against the System – swimming against the flow. Rebellious is his second name. And he is frank almost to the point of brutality. His statements are always hard-hitting. And he is YOUNG!!We are talking about the “new” darling of Malayalam – Prithviraj Sukumaran. [On second thoughts, new may not be the right word as he burst into the scene some 3-4 years ago. Nevertheless..]. He has got a new lease of life after Classmates has rocked the Box Office.
Prithvi made his debut in Nakshathra kannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari. He did not exactly set the screen on fire. But people started taking notice of him in “Stop Violence”. It was hard to ignore the lanky youth with a good physique and that mean rebellious streak in him – both in front and behind the camera. However it was Nandanam that anointed him as a real hero in a Cinderalla-like love story. As the lover boy, Manu, who falls in love with the servant Balamani. Navya walked away with the honors but Prithvi cemented his place in Malayalam as a hero.
Prithvi always insisted in interviews that he is in the field not for the money, but because he loved acting. [After doing his studies in Sainik School Kazhakkutam, he did his college in Australia and he mentions that he had job offers in hand before he decided to dabble in Movies]
One another advantage he had over other younger heros was that he was tall, had a good moustache [a must attribute for heros for us Mallus] and could do both action and romantic roles with panache. Even though Prithvi’s movies like Swapnakoodu, Vellinakshatram etc met with moderate success, the argument against him was that he couldn’t carry a film on his shoulders alone. He however did show glimpses of his potential in films like Ammakilikkodu .
In between he had his share of gossips. Rumors about his tying the knot with Meera Jasmine was the talk of the town – though both denied it. Then came the AMMA clash. He spoke out against the step-motherly treatment of AMMA towards some of her children and his comments were interpreted as against the superstars and the super directors. It was projected that Prithvi was an arrogant brat and had people saying “Venda Mone Venda Mone” to his antics. It did not take long for him to get a “hidden ban” in AMMA. He had an able ally in Vinayan whose “love” for the superstars was well known. The two joined and a forgettable movie called Sathyam was born. Even though Prithvi did a few stunts sans a dupe – a la Jayan – the movie still could not be saved.
After his offers in Malayalam came to a trickle, he decided to try his luck in Tamil [an anomaly - as normally its the Malayali heroine who feel suffocated by the glamour-less and penniless values in Malayalam and hop-skip-jump to Tamil and shed clothes at the drop of a hat].
Kana Kandein marked his debut and Tamizh Ulagam and Tamil girls especially loved the villain for his acting abilities and looks – though not in the same order. This was followed by Parijatham, a Bhagyaraj movie. The movie also received a good response and Prithvi even had the privilege of sharing the dais with Rajnikanth in one of the promotion events.
Unfortunately for Prithvi, Bhagyaraj wanted to make Parijatham his daughter’s launchpad – Her plump visage eclipsed poor Prithvi in all the posters. Still he had reason to rejoice as he has a few good offers in hand.
Vargam saw Prithvi coming of age. As Solomon, the corrupt officer in the first half and the victim of his own doings in the second, he won accolades of the critics and the masses alike. The movie did average business and producers and directors slowly started taking interest in him. Lal Jose, who was considered the best mate of Dileep [ who was reportedly one of the "enemies" of Prithvi], took the bold step of casting Prithvi as one of the lead heroes in Classmates. The rest is history. And as Balachandran Adiga in Vasthavam, Prithvi has once again proved that he hes here to stay.
Prithvi’s demeanour have irked many and say that he was a chip of the old block. If one could draw an analogy of him with cricket, he could be compared to Shoaib Akthar of Pakistan – Killer looks, rebellious, lovable, extremely talented, brash competitive and irritating people with his shooing from the hip comments. He has a good future ahead of him and there looks to be no stiff competition to him from co-stars of his age. Add a few lessons in Public relations and you have a finished article.

A Profile of Prithviraj, I personally feel, would be incomplete without a mention of Swapnakoodu. Though he had with him Kunchacko Boban and Jayasurya, it was essentially, Prithviraj`s performance which carried the film and the script. He had performed his character with finesses and is surely one of his better films.
With Best Regards,
Srijith.

Prithviraj is not the savior of Malayalam cinema that he is portrayed to be in this article. If he is, then God help us. I have not seen Vargam or Vasthavam, but I have seen Classmates, Swapnakoodu, and Nandanam. His dialogue delivery is average. He does not speak Malayalam well. And, he does not know how to romance. Have you seen the way he holds his heroines? So stiff. I’ve even started to think that he might be gay.
His brother Indrajit is way better in every way (watch Mullavalliyum Thenmavum and Classmates).
The only thing Prithviraj has going for him is his looks. He’s not going far with that in the Malayalam cine world. Remember Shankar?
November 21st, 2006 at 8:07 pm
I agree wih Karthiyani. His acting is just about OK. He’s got good looks and has the frame of a “hero”. He’ll do angry young man role well. But acting-wise, his brother is much better than him.
But I think his performance in Swapnakoodu was quite impressive.
November 21st, 2006 at 9:27 pm
You guys seems to miss naren aka sunil kumar. Although he has the potential to make it in tamil cinema, i bet he wants to stay in malluwood and will do so by striving the balance between tamil and malayalam which elluded M&Ms.
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:03 am
I think Pritviraj needs to be time to mature. He’s only in his early twenties. Also, to be noted that he still is to work with any of the top directors (except maybe Lohitadas).
But isn’t Varnachitram promoting Pritviraj a bit too much?
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:27 am
Its funny when people totally negate or ignore the importance of Prithviraj in Classmates…from the beginning to the end of the movie it is his solid acting that holds the movie together…people like indrajith and naren did exceedingly well but be it in the stunt scenes, the emotional scenes and the campus scenes he displayed a great depth in his acting, and held the movie together…if he had failed u cud have imagined the movie’s plight…and except for him every other actor in the movie was replaceable…think of who else could have carried that role with the same gusto he showed.
Sad that even after Vargam, Kana Kandein, Classmates, Vasthavam, Akale, Swapnakoode, Nandanam or even Stop Violence for that matter people still doubt his calibre. Karthyani i have lived in kerala all my life and i think Prithvi speaks better malayalam than 90% of the youngsters today…and the comparison between Shankar and Prithvi, u gotta be joking rite…shankar was a rage in kerala before he fell…prithvi has been struggling to get acceptance for the last four years and i think this year may just be his watershed year…he has had vargam, achanurangatha veedu, parijatham, classmates and vasthavam and movies like pagal, anantham, satham podathe and mozhi about to release.
let me tell what the main problem here is straight in the face…Prithvi knowingly or unknowingly has cultivated the personality of a suave, urbane, smart-talking guy and in our egoistic, socialist kerala someone like him is the exact opposite of the average malayali young man of today like you and me…a huge huge bulk of the young guys of today are by nature insecure, unconfident and regressive though they outwardly show a lot of bravado while this guy, Prithvi comes across as the exact anathema of you and me…he speaks very good english, is outspoken and at the same time reserved, takes on the system and tries to undo a status-quo which is giving a lot of old directors and actors trouble.
am not here for a debate with anyone… thanks to the writers at varnachtram for still having faith in Prithviraj and trying to help boost this young man’s career. At 24 my biggest struggle was how to hold my drink…just imagine what he is up against at that age…the collective apathy of 70% of kerala…man i wud have fled!
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:47 am
Considering the number of movies he acted in, there are only 3 movies in which he has shown his acting talents. (Akale, Swapnakoodu & Classmates – Yet to see Vargam). At the sametime, look at other young guns like Sunil aka Narein. He has very few movies to his credit, but you can still say 2 (Achuvinte Amma, Classmates) of his performances, if not 3 (2 + For the People). If you were talking about an up-coming “star” than an “actor” this article is fine or else Prithvi is not worthy of this much space here. I think the time has not yet come to scale Prithvi as a promising actor.
And he started acting because of his love for it? Who doesn’t want money, who doesn’t want fame? What was his acting profile before entering into the cinema??
Ammakilikoodu was one of the disasters in Malayalam cinema. Its one movie which could have been a classic if it was in the good hands of a talented director.
I doubt there is a lobby trying to boost him just the same as the one that try to drop him.
November 22nd, 2006 at 7:16 am
Karthyayani, The savior of Malayalam cinema is not Mammotty or Mohanlal or Prithviraj. It is decent story tellers. If they vanish, these stars will become shooting stars.
Compared to other young actors, Prithvi has the screen prescence to do macho roles convincingly. Naren/Sunil is exceptionally good, but I doubt if people will accept a non-mimicry/non-film family actor that easily.
November 22nd, 2006 at 9:57 pm
I totally agree to what Jiby has said. Classmates will be remembered as Pritviraj’s film eventhough all the characters will get its mention. It is really an achievement for a 24-year old guy.
Jo, as you mentioned, I also felt the presence of a lobby against Pritviraj. But not the other way around. Each cinegoer in Kerala knew about what was happening during AMMA conflicts. I became a fan of this guy more be cause of the determination and character he showed. He never got a chance to act under frontline directors after the conflict, yet he sustained and that too royally.
When success comes, there will be supporters. Did anyone discussed about Pritviraj before ‘classmates’?
November 23rd, 2006 at 6:28 am
Jiby, You said it. Totally agree with you.
November 23rd, 2006 at 1:24 pm
i too agree with srijit. i believe prithviraj has off late matured into a fine actor ,but he showed promising glimpses in nandanan and esp swapnakoodu which he played convincingly . i felt like watching the film again only to catch him and meera jasmine . whatever rumours may say about them , their role and enactment of the chartbuster was as good as they did it for real . after a long time ,i felt like someone could enact a song so convincingly . more films should be lined up for these two as they seem to be shying away from working together . maybe mani ratnam or kamal can help !
November 24th, 2006 at 5:13 am
I have been a staunch supporter of Prithvi for some time now, and have sit through inimitable nonsense as Krithyam, just for the actor’s sake. But it remains a fact that Prithvi is just replicating himself, and the angry-young-man tag is getting a bit too dreary. I dont believe Prithvi made Classmates the blockbuster that it has turned out to be. No doubt he has chipped in a decent performance, but it would have remained a hit irrespective of who the actor was. High time, a little bit of planning came to play in his career. And yes, he could do good with a bit of PR too.
November 24th, 2006 at 9:39 pm
I agree with Jiby.
November 26th, 2006 at 9:50 am
Ultimately, the success of an actor depends on whether the audience can identify with the character that he portrays. It seems that many of the visitors of Varnachitram can identify with Prithviraj. Perhaps it’s because he, like them, is a techno savvy youngster who is more comfortable in jeans than in a mundu, and speaking manglish than pure malayalam.
Unfortunately for Prithviraj, the majority of the malayalam cinema audience still identifies with the mundu-wearing, plain malayalam-speaking, village-type than in an urban hero. Just look at Dileep’s career. The roles that endeared him to the audience were the ones where he played a village simpleton. Even his hit dance numbers feature him and supporting actors in lungis.
Every village-guy role of Prithviraj’s has failed because he cannot portray a villager convincingly. He does not understand the soul of the grameena purushan. I saw clips of the movie Chakram and couldn’t help thinking that the character could have been portrayed brilliantly by Mohanlal. Most reviews that I read faulted Prithviraj for the failure of that movie.
My advice to Prithviraj would be to stick to roles that are close to what he truly is. Otherwise, go out into the real world and study the folks whose lives you are portraying.
November 26th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
It is interesting to read so many things about an actor, who was clinically cut in to sizes for his looks, acting abilities etc. This shows the importance of him and the threat from him. Look at Dileep, who thinks only he should be there as a star after the duo if Mammo and Lal, for achieveing this he will do anything. If Vasthavam become big, everyone knows there will not be any stopping of Prithvi, which is the reason some played with some of the teaters and Film Weekly’s to downgrade the movie. Just watch it, you will understnad what is Prithvi is made off. He is sure to go places like Mammoo or Lal. Noone can stop him, he is having talent and looks and a penchant for acting or doing dare devil roles, or good romance the essential for a la Mammo or Lal.
November 27th, 2006 at 9:27 am
Karthyani,
We know for a fact that some of our regular readers are not youngsters, wear a mundu (except for women who wear sarees or churidars), speak excellent malayalam and also like prithviraj.
November 27th, 2006 at 9:44 am
Wow, this is a wonderful observation. Want Hits, wear Mundu!
November 27th, 2006 at 10:15 am
The motive behind this article is NOT to glorify Prithviraj as expressed by some people.
If you note the title – it is “Prithviraj – A profile” NOT “Prithviraj – A Saviour” or “Prithviraj – A loud mouth”. The article just outlines his career as an actor. Prithviraj is not the solution to the ailing Malayalam Industry – however he offers a glimmer of hope.
Our cupboard of talent in Malayalam movie industry looks virtually empty – bit like our Indian cricket team – once the “biggies” decide to call it a day, the void they will leave behind – will be too big to be filled.
Lets face it – no malayalam actor can replace our two supertars [Note - no shooting stars with 1/2 film wonders included. Also mimicry stars excluded] and in terms of talent and sheer acting capabilities. They are first rate and will always be the best our industry has produced apart from legends like Nazir, Sathyan and Kottarakara of olden days and Nedumudi Venu, Thilakan of the present. These are actors who have virtually done every role from fisherman to IAS officer and that too with elan. They have won so many laurels for malayalam cinema
If we can produce 2-3 good actors who can at least be half of what our superstars in terms of acting, we are blessed. But that will not happen unless our script-writers spend some of their time in tackling realistic and socially releavnt subjects – Masalas also will do once in a while – rather than churning up the same formula driven stories beaten to death.
November 27th, 2006 at 11:56 am
The problem with Malayalam film industry is not Mammotty or Mohanlal. The problem is that producers are still flocking behind them due to the economic gains they give.
You say “Prithviraj is not the solution to the ailing Malayalam Industry”. Right now, he is the only hope I see as a youngster. As Mammotty and Mohanlal are acting with the children and grandchildren of their ex-heroines, there is a vacancy for young characters. There is a limit to what hair transplant, ayurvedic massages, makeup and Katrina Kaif can do to make one look younger.
“Our cupboard of talent in Malayalam movie industry looks virtually empty – bit like our Indian cricket team – once the “biggies†decide to call it a day, the void they will leave behind – will be too big to be filled.”
Once upon a time Jayan was the craze of Kerala. When he died, people asked, who will fill the void? There was no one in sight. Apparently some unknowns stepped in and made their mark. Nazir and Sathyan were considered irreplaceable by their generation. But we have seen that they are. So when they leave, some others will fill in that void. This phenomena is cyclical and every generation thinks that the bunch of actors they adore are gods, but practically new blood will come. I can see that your deep love for Mohanlal prevents you from accepting it, but evidence seems to suggest otherwise.
I agree with you that if we can produce good actors now itself, there will be a good continuity and will be good for the industry and viewers, but in the current superstar driven industry that is not going to happen.
Personally I think Malayalam film industry will die in a decade. Then we can be happy watching Hindi and Tamil movies.
November 27th, 2006 at 12:17 pm
Srinivasan – I wont venture to respond to whom I allow allegiance to. Its a personal choice and I dont think it matters.
Nobody here talked about Katrina Kaif or using herbal hair dyes or doing hair transplants in Singapore or Timbuktoo.
Even die hard fans of superstars squirm when they see the superstars dance with teenagers. Its not a secret.
You talked about Jayan. At the same time, Lal and Mammotty were almost getting themselves estblished in the industry. A small factor unlike now is that we had more than 3 or 4 times the movies being released now. So the chances of surivival were more unlike now.
Its not fair to blame the superstars for all the problems. Does somebody say that in Tamil – that Rajnikanth is acting with Shriya who is just about 20 something. I doubt if he has acted as a married man with a kid in the last 15 years or so.
Malayalam industry will die not even in a decade. Hell its been going on for something like 70 years and it will live to complete 100 years
November 27th, 2006 at 12:40 pm
Mohanlal is almost 20 years my senior, and I would love to dance with him.
Admit it, you guys are just jealous.
November 27th, 2006 at 1:35 pm
Hey karthyani – Lal is just 46. You make him sound like a 50 plus oldie. Mammotty though is 53 something
November 27th, 2006 at 1:42 pm
Karthyani,I would be jealous only when Mohanlal dances with girls.
November 27th, 2006 at 1:44 pm
Unni,
I was just responding to your comment: “Even die hard fans of superstars squirm when they see the superstars dance with teenagers. Its not a secret.”
I don’t squirm. You should amend that to say “die hard MALE fans”.
November 27th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
Karthyani – Apologies.
btw since the p.o.discussion is prithviraj and not mohanlals dancing, can we go back to that please. Incidentally i feel hes the best dancer in Malayalam after vineeth for his flexibility of movement (but again am not jealous)
November 28th, 2006 at 4:03 am
Prithi did an exceptionally good act in Swapnakoodu.I can see that movie any number of times coz of him and Meera.
That said,I never felt classmates is Prithvi’s movie though he has the max screen time and technically is the hero.
Classmates comes across as a combined effort, even the junior artistes were so good!
November 28th, 2006 at 9:17 am
To Karthik,
You obviously didn’t understand what I was saying. In Prithviraj’s case, it’s “Want hits? DON’T wear Mundu.”
November 28th, 2006 at 9:33 am
In Classmates, Pritviraj’s character was wearing a Mundu most of the time.
November 28th, 2006 at 10:20 am
Classmates is not a hit because of Prithviraj. Vasthavam proved that. In my opinion, Prithviraj was not comfortable in his skin in Classmates. He was much more comfortable with his roles in Police and Swapnakoodu. When the general mallu audience can identify with such characters, he will become a star.
November 28th, 2006 at 1:56 pm
It’s true that a movie’s success is a combination of factors, but I find your logic strange, which is – reason for classmates success is not Prithviraj, because Vasthavam is not a hit – applying the same logic – reason for Narasimham’s success is not mohanlal because vanaprastham was a flop.
November 28th, 2006 at 7:28 pm
I think we are talking too much on this guy, which itself is an indication how each one of us treat him. Recently we saw the Movie Vasthavam. I think only Mammooty can give such a performnce, since Lal is not penetrating thru his eyes. Such was the acting of Prithvi. My wife, a Lal fan finally agreed this fellow must be the man for the future. My son (17 year old), a Dhoom, Gajini type, who saw only Classmates in the last year also agreed he never watched any actor performs so brilliantly and also on the point that none of these Dhoom and Gajiny types close to this. It is a pity that the Keralites again loosing a chance to create an Impact in the Industry by supporting this movie or may be Karuthapkshikal than the stupid deals like Vava, Bhargvm, Saumdram etc., where the Super Star license was misused by the 2 Ms.
Prithvi is going to be the man of pride for all Kerlites after the great 2 Ms, may be he will achieve much better stature than them in the outside Kerala.
What we want, rubbish from Suresh Gopi, Mimics and same stuffs from Dileep or overaged style from 2 Ms or great young roles from Prithvi, Narain etc. No surprise movies like DON and Dhoom 2 creates collection records.
December 20th, 2006 at 7:03 am
Hey everyone!i just think that everyone is taking it 2 hard on Prithviraj….let’s just face the truth…many people just can’t accept Prithviraj because they never expected such a handsome and equally talented hero….They are just jealous because Prithviraj unlike most other Malayalam heroes comes as a complete package…He is so good that other film industries(tamil and telugu) r fond of signing him in their movies….According to me he speaks very good Malayalam as well as English…He does his roles to perfection and it is obvious that his dancing his really good(A point to note that dancing is not exactly a Malayalam actor’s forte….)Though initially he did put on a bit of weight, eventually he lost it and became really smart looking with a good phisique in addion to his really nice height..Again it is rare that Malayalam actors maintain their size…They put on loads of flab, have really big tummies and have cheeks which look like their going to burst!
This is especially to Karthyani:
Prithviraj is just too romantic and he potrays love with his heroines very effectively that it looks so realistic…Didn’t u see ishtamallada(swapnakoodu)neeyen sundari(sathyam),natha(vaasthavam),kaathiruntha pennalle(classmates),pinakkamano ennoinakkamano(ananthbhadram) n so many other songs….also in films like nammal thammil…..he is so romantic that he could be called anyhting except a homosexual or a gay!
so please guys….stop being green-eyed monsters n welcome this prince who is a king in making…..
December 20th, 2006 at 11:18 am
Aren’t we expecting a bit too much from Prithviraj here? Agreed, he’s a rather decent actor, but expecting him to get the cream of the offers after 10 good performances (if there are that many) is a bit too much. Even comparing Prithvi to the two Ms at this stage (acting-wise) is being complimentary. Takes time to climb up the ladder.
I agree that after the 2 Ms, Prithvi seems to be the logical successor – if he can concentrate on his work, and learn some humility. He has a big mouth, IMHO.
January 9th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
i agree completely to jiby and kaveena. prithvi can sustain a range of expressions. i haven’t seen that range in many actors of indian movies especially amongst new comers. but considering prithvi’s age and the very few # of years he has been in the movie industry it is quite impressive and we must give him time to evolve as a big time actor. he has the potential and the physique. his looks are very different from the looks malayalam heroes have been having since ages. may be our diffident minds cannot accept a guy with change. not that others are bad, but new ones need not look like old ones just to get accepted.
January 10th, 2007 at 12:26 am
Lakshmi’s comments are very realistic and probably he is the one everyone talks off. He will be there for ages. It is sure.
January 21st, 2007 at 5:44 pm
At last we got good actor who can take mallu movies to hits, he is perfect in his roles and his movies are good to watch for people of all ages, unlike those flumpy actors who had ruled are no where to be seen in other than malayalam movies, had enjoyed decades in mallu movie.
It is time for the other old men to take a walk and watch the young actors performance.
January 22nd, 2007 at 3:13 am
Well…I am not against Prithviraj. But I yet to consider him as a good actor. All of his “good” movies discussed here Nandanam, Classmates etc. any body could have done his role. Cause in these movies Script and Direction mattered. Now coming to Vargam and Vaastavam, yep I do agree with the fact that he can portray “Angry young man” absolutely well.
I would rate Sunil/Narain, as a much better and mature actor than Prithvi. Let’s put some fact here.
He’s not into subtle acting which malayalam has always been famous for. But he really does show a lot of improvement.
January 23rd, 2007 at 6:36 am
well i think Prithviraj has just started learning acting yet he has to make his own identity in everyones heart. But he will make it one day as thats what his performance shows nowerdays, mainly from last 1 year.
February 2nd, 2007 at 1:13 am
yea, I too would like to compare Prithviraj with Narain. If it was b4 classmates & paarijatham, I would have def gone for Narain as a better actor, esp for his perforamces in 4th people and achuvinte amma.(he transforms better as a character). But these two movies showed that prithvi has got potential in acting, though in the budding stage. These two guys will be the next big things in malayalam film industry.
On acting skills prithvi might not be as talented as his brother,I feel indrajit is more of a natural sort of actor. But for a hero, prithvi is still favoured.
February 5th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
If I had to pick an actor who could carry the baton from Mohanlal/Mamootty ,in the Malayalam film industry, I cannot think of a better candidate than Prithviraj. He’s an all-rounder who can carry an role with ease and can play any role from a young boy to a man. Considering his age he’s got years to stick around and prove himself. K. Bobban,Jayasurya or even Dileep have not had the oppportunity to portray as wide a range of characters as Prithviraj has.So who else can we expect to see in the future?
February 5th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
Coming from somebody who practically grew up watching the mid-80 mallu movies, what mallu cinema needs is not a superstar, but really unique scripts. If the storyline is good, i’m ready to put up with a mediocre actor like Prithviraj. At the risk of being labeled a neo-nazi, if you look at the crowd in a theatre, you would mostly see low class auto rikshaw drivers and the likes only. Bitter as the truth may be, the majority of these people are entertained easily by a few tamil-style songs and a couple of fight scenes thrown in. To be honest there are more sensible movies made in tamil. Not that there’s anything wrong with such movies – whoever wants to watch such movies may watch them. But for god’s sake please make at least one decent movie per year so that the mallu film industry keeps breathing on a respirator. I wish more sensible movies & movie-goers return to malayalam. God bless!!!
March 4th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
Am just back from seeing Prithvi’s latest movie in Tamil, Mozhi… Prithvi has done an excellent job in the movie… He was great in the comedy sequences… Though the movie belongs to Jyothika for her powerful performance and Prakashraj for his electrifying role in the movie, Prithvi has also held his ground and was a delight to watch in the sequences with Prakashraj… He was not comfortable with comedy early in his career, but he has grown and has given a wonderful performance in the movie.. And this is not the usual vulgar and slap stick comedy of Tamil movies, but an enjoyable dialog oriented comedy movie with a good story…
P.S. Raphael and Unni, I would want you both to watch this movie and give Ur comments on the same…
Unnikrishnan G Nair.
March 17th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
well prithviraj is a really good actor..i had left off watching malayalam movies a few years ago when all tat was coming out were movies like narasimham with no storyline, too much violence, bad music etc etc.it was only after movies like nandanam, police and swapnakoodu my interest in malayalam movies revived.prithviraj is a really good actor.he is really lucky too cos he s come at a time when originality and freshness has returned to malayalam cinema.i dunno whether its just me but i ve often found prithvi s acting similar to mohanlals..like tat scene in swapnakoodu where he gets embarassed in front of meera jasmine who sees him giving flying kisses to manya
March 18th, 2007 at 8:52 am
Dear Kartyani,
Don’t u think think you are a bit rude towards Prithvi.Have u seen Mammootty act in his initial few movies. He couldn’t emote well; His dialogue delivery was poor,He couldnot even smile properly(even he has admitted that); And have u seen his romantic scenes then ;they were so artificial.
Considering all that Prithviraj has a given us a more than decent performance. And his best films are Vargam,Vasthavam,Kana Kanden(tamil)etc.I think u haven’t seen them.
And one more thing plz dont compare him with Mohanlal or Mammootty. He is not even 26 and he has also shown vast improvement with each movie.

I agree with Jiby. I think that prithviraj is a very good actor. The only movies I saw is the ones he has acted in tamil. I think that he will do very good in the future. In mozhi he has done a great job. I really liked that movie. I also love the way he speaks tamil. He speaks it very well. I love the way he acts. I cant wait to see his next movies satham poudathea and others.

Pritvi has to go a long way.Back in 1980s lal and mammootty had the luck to act in so many talented director’s movies. Each of them acted around an average of 35 movies per year. Now the number has come down to 1/3 and a new breed of directors has entered the stage with formula films plus some fans asociations. All these are detrimental to good cinema. Pritvi has to look out for good stories and scripts since he is young and there is lots of time for him since he started early. Act in good films with stuff. Do not act in mock parody films.

from my point of view, i think pritvi raj is simply superb! he came with a package : great acting, fantastic personality and uncomparable talent. his tamil is really good. he will definately go very far with his continuous powerful performance. I would be glad if anyone could give me his date of birth and address.

Well, it is interesting to read so much about an actor – his pluses and minuses.
That by itself is testimony to the fact that he is creating ripples, if not waves.
I am from Chennai and have been watching mallu movies occasionally – two big M’s over the years..
And recently, I have fallen prey to watching PR’s movies too, especially after Kana kanden and Nandanam. I believe he gave a decent performance in the latter considering he was just 17.
Ever since, I have watched about 14 of his mallu movies and yes, he has evolved into a fine actor and is slowly climbing the ladder. One cannot compare him to heroes who have more than 400 films behind their belts; acting is like wine; gets better with age and experience. For the 5 years he has been in the field, I think PR is turning out just fine and in the right direction. He carried off his comedy role in swapnakoodu with élan and grace; and his portrayal of an extremist in daivanamathil deserves a mention too. And vargam, his body language was perfect; I felt that he did a better job in vargam than in vaasthavam which could have been due to the script too. There wasn’t any logic as to why he decided to climb up the political or secretarial ladder so soon, at whatever cost. Given that, he did emote well, to suit his role;
But classmates, yes, it was a joint effort and the success could be attributed to the nostalgia it brought about for folks all around, plus a good script and excellent performances by all; but PR did do meaty justice to his role and came out with a fine performance as an ideal leftist and a guy in the throes of mental agony. His expressions clearly showed us that here was a man going through so much in life and yet he tried to maintain the social decorum by joining in the festivities. That by itself is a difficult thing to exhibit.
I have been trying to get his movies online – few like krithyam, kadha, nammal thammil, etc. yet to find them somewhere in the web.
Let us wait for a few more movies before judging him; so far he has done good and another factor that works in his favour is his ability to carry a conversation in depth during an interview. And his maturity belies his age during such interviews. I don’t think it is fair to compare him to the great M & M of mallu world. If one wants a clean picture, they ought to rewind back to the reviews/articles written about M and M after their initial 25 movies. Maybe they had to go through the same cleansing processes. Sorry for the long post.

Prithviraj is definitely a good actor with good screen presence.Unfortunately the present Malayalam movie industry is not ready to grow or accept any new talents. It is not his fault……

Prithviraj. Is he a king (Prithiviraj Chowhan) or an actor or a normal human being? I have never seen such a person like him. Rather than saying him as a king or an actor, simply he is a good person. His handsome-look, pleasing personality and humourous character make people very much. He is my favorite hero. I like his style, dress coding, shining eyes, lotus lips, apple cheek, body structure, etc., Everything is perfect. Ware wah! what a superb hero! Anybody know his email id and contact details please….
Tamil film “Mozhi” song “Sevvaanam selaiyai” remake
Prithviraj ennai thottu senraan kanavile
Ennai konradhu parvaiyile
Uyir vegudhu nenjinile
Yaaro avan yaaro solvaar illai
Neril senru pesa neramillai
Kaiyil vandhu ponaan kaiyil illai

Raju is definitely a good actor with good screen presence. His new films chocolates & Kannampoochiyeneda are goods films. His acting and Tamil pronunciations are so good.

Need to appreciate a telugu person having interest in PR.
Prithviraj and Narain(Sunil) had good tamil hits. Mozhi was really good.
Narain was ok in Chitiram Pesudhadi and his latest Anjathey is doing good.
Tired of the oldies(M&M). They are really good actors but they are old and I do’t like to see with 20 year old heroines. (Even Jayaram was famous in tamil than these M&Ms.)
Malayalam industry (AMMA) beware of this. You wil be losing PR & Narain to APPA

I really agree with what Karthyani said, but that does’t mean that I disagree with others.
Let me be honest, I really like him. What makes me do so is his personality. I love him, on the other hand, because of his random arrival on my dreams.
April 15th, 2008 at 1:43 am
Whatever the pluses & minuses, one thing is very clear ” PRITHVI IS THE DREAM BOY OF EVERY GIRL” His romantic expressions are at ease & extremely natural.

I am no big fan of any moviestar. Nor with prithviraj.First I thought he is expressionless with big eyes and mature-than-age looks. But now after seeing a lot many movies of him,I know that he really has the genes.Forget the personality, but when you keep your ears open, you find the real gift of the gab and strong dialogue delivery.
Maybe Malayalis need a combination of Mohanlal and Mammootty in the future, what say guys?
September 3rd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Prithiviraj now looks very young, charm and energetic and this is because of his new look for film Ravana. But I need to know like how prithivi changed his look, especially for balded head. Did he went for hair transplant or hair fixing.
If anyone know please share with me…
August 5th, 2009 at 3:18 am
Interesting discussion…that’s now 3 years old.
Narasimham was an all out one man show. It depended completely on the star power of Lal. It had no plot or anything, it was a pure star film. Classmates on the other hand is a different film. It is the story that obviously attracted the audience, not Prithviraj. In a way I think another actor who fitted the bill to play Sukumaran could have played and the film still would have been a success.
August 26th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
I cant understand what James saying…..if his statement is true then any of the films like panjabi house, hari krishnans, vandanan are combination hits not because of the hero in it.
the highly paid actor seems to be the hero of the film. eg: in kabhi alvida, and kabhi kabhi shahrukh khan has considered as the hero ,and it is considered as a SRK movie not amitabh bachans ….so that in classmates prithvi was the highest paid actor and he was the centerpoint even if narain has done an unavoidable part …..

I totally agree with the earlier comments saying tht prithviraj is talented, intelligent, smart, handsome, brave, itellectual, knowledgeable, and above all a person with self esteem. Most of the time if any malayali ever have all these qualities eventually ends up in an image of ” moorkhan or muradan or themmadi”.
It is not your fault boy. It is the fault of all our malayalies. They cannot accept anythins not ‘ our type ‘. For example if anybody speaks english we say ‘ avante oru jada’ if anybody dress up smart or behave smart then also we say the same.
Prithviraj is a good actor and has real talents, give him time and moral support.
This is an advise to everybody in the malayalam industry. Accept the difference in him. we need that in malaylam film industry.
