Srividya was hospitalized a month back due to illness and later the illness was diagnoses was an advanced form of cancer . Today she lost the battle and is no more.

She was born in 1953 in Chennai as the daughter of Vikatam Krishnamurthy and M.L.Vasanthakumari. At the age of 13 she made her screen debut with the Tamil film Thiruvilayadal. Her Malayalam debut came with the movie chattambikavala. Her acting career spanned 35 years and she has acted in nearly 800 movies in 6 languages. She has won Kerala State’s best actress award three times. In the last part of her career she was concentrating in Television -anchoring programs and acting in serials. She married producer George Thomas and later they divorced. The winner of numerous state awards, she was a popular mother figure for many actors.

Though we have seen her in innumerable movies in Malayalam paired with Sathyan, Nazir and Madhu, one of the most memorable scenes in recent times she acted was in the final scene of Aniyathipravu. Though we were not very impressed with the initial part of the movie, in the final scene, Srividya playing Kunchako’s mother comes to return Shalini’s chain. Shalini prepares tea for everyone and gives it to everyone. The scene is tension filled as Shalini and Kunchako had eloped and had returned back to keep their parents happy. Srividya gives the chain back, does not say anything and is about to go back when Lalitha, who plays Shalini’s mother asks Srividya to bless her daughter who is getting married. Srividya turns to Shalini, looks at Lalitha and says, “Ente Mole enikku thanoode” in a most uniquely sentimental way. At that point the theatre was flooded with tears. We believe it is this scene which saved the movie.

We will miss her.

  1. Too young to die. It is another loss for the film industry this year. She was a natural beauty. Wish she had more peace in her real life. But will be remembered through her films.

  2. Quite young to die at 53. At one stage, it looked as if she had overcome cancer

Sreevidya was memorable in her role in Suryaputhri and jayaraj’s Kudumbasametham

Even though she was not a Malayali, she had typical Malayali looks. Coming from a music background, she was a good singer as well.

A big loss to the entire film fraternity

  3. I was under the impression that Malayalam was her mother tongue.

    Her eyes are unforgettable.

  4. SK. Sreevidya was the daughter of the legendary Tamil classic singer ML Vasanthakumari

  5. One of the most beautiful women in malayalam cinema…My favourite role of hers was in “Pavithram”…I had the good luck to meet her.
    Taffy

  6. Yes, that was an untimely death. Again we are wondering who all are going to replace these talents. Srividya is the latest entrant to the list of unreplacable talent slike Shankaradi, Oduvil etc.

For me, her best movies are “Rachana” (Mohan), “Adaminte Variyellu” (K G George) and “Edavazhiyile Poocha Minda Poocha”(Hariharan-MT)

May her soul rest in peace
