With 32 movies together Joshi and Mammotty formed a genre in Malayalam. It can be said that Joshi transformed Mammotty’s career. The last movie they together was nearly 6 years back – the debacle known as Dubai. After that for some reason the director and actor kept the distance from each other. In between Joshi became Joshiey and concentrated on other actors in Malayalam and continued to do what he’s known for: creating hits after hits with not so great scripts.
Pothen Vava is the movie in which these two are coming together again. The movie also has the novelty of Usha Uthup’s screen debut. The story and screenplay is by Benny Nayarambalam who had written scripts for Thommanum Makkalum and Chanthupottu.
Advocate Kurisummoottil Mariamma is one of the most popular figures in the Puliyangudi. She is a successful senior advocate, known for her versatile rhetoric and volatile temper while in court. She marries musician Melpathur Vishnu Namboothiri after a short span of love life. The problem between them starts with the arrival of their son, Vava. They soon separates and Vava grow up with his mother, who believes in no religion or caste, enters the church and conducts the temple festivals at the same time and helps the commoners of the village with his might . He is a proud and arrogant brat who looks after the family farm. He involves in every issues of the village which he solves by the violent fisticuffs. This in course of time earns him the name Pothu among the villagers.
Though he is an arrogant vanquisher before the masses, in front of his mother he is as tame as a house cat, and never does anything against her wishes.
Pothen Vava tells the story of the relationship between the two, and promises to have an ample dose of action, humor and melodrama. Mammootty plays the role of Vava, while pop diva Usha Uthup makes her first appearance in the silver screen as Advocate Mariamma. [Pothen Vava]
Mammotty’s heroine is Gopika which is a perfect match since Mammotty is approximately Gopika’s age now. Mammotty also dances in the movie and so all those folks who missed Rajamanikyam and Thuruppu Gulan still have a chance to watch this new art form. The movie’s music is by Alex Paul who has been reveling in the success of his hit compositions for Classmates.
Mammotty is having a dry spell now and with this entertainer he could get his mojo back like what happened with New Delhi. If this becomes a hit, then Joshiey could rename himself to Joshi.

Good movie. Mammooty and Usha Uthup are enviously performed in this. Worth seeing. The story is not boring – the story keeps the viewer interest growing till the end. Well written story.
Good story, good performance from the actors.
