Malayalam Cinema is under the grip of superstars even in 2006. Except for Mammotty, Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi and Dileep, no other hero’s movies had much financial success. This trend is bad for the movie industry as we will get to see only those movies in which these four can act which excludes so many stories. While talking to varnachitram.com, script writers Uday Krishna and Sibi K. Thomas said that producers look at the actors and decide if they will finance a film or not and unlike Tamil or Telugu industries we don’t have a whole lot of young actors to bank on.

It is with great hope that we await the release of Lal Jose’s new movie Classmates which stars Prithviraj, Indrajith, Sunil, Jayasurya and Kavya Madhavan.

P. Sukumaran (Prithviraj) was a firebrand student leader owing allegiance to the Left while Satheesan Kanjikuzhy (Jayasoorya) led the rival group. `Vaalu’ Vasu (Vijeesh) is his trusted crony. Pious (Indrajith) is a rich college Romeo while Thara Kurup (Kavya Madhavan), daughter of the local MLA, is a dancer. Others in the group include Rasiya (Radhika) who is called `Penguin,’ on account of her dress sense and Koshi (Anoop), the `brains.’

It was Murali (Narain), a singer, who used to insist on the group meeting after 10 years or so after their graduation. As Murali dies under mysterious circumstances while in college, his parents, who are teachers in the college, take it upon themselves to bring them together. Balachandra Menon and Sobha Mohan enact the roles of the parents. [Campus capers on screen]

All the actors in this movie have been dying for a hit. Prithviraj had a good role in Vargam, but it failed to give a boost to his career. Sunil who made an impact in For the people had an excellent role in Achuvinte Amma. Now his Tamil career is doing better than Malayalam. The careers of Indrajith and Jayasurya are best left unsaid. Kavya Madhavan had a box office hit in Kilukkam Kilukilukkam even though the movie damaged our brains.

Both Prithviraj and Sunil have the talent and capability to rise to the top and if this movie is successful, more producers will be willing to make movies with them. Kavya is the only Malayali actress with both feet inside Kerala and she needs a movie which will make use of her talent in acting.

Lal Jose is a director who knows his craft very well (if you forgive Rasikan and Pattalam) and he can make an entertainer like Meesha Madhavan as well as deal with serious issues in movies like Achanurangatha Veedu. Lal Jose was closely identified with Dileep movies, but he seems to have break off that tag and is now making movies with other actors as well. The script is by newcomer James Albert who says that the movie is not autobiographical, but fictional.

Good music has been a trademark of Lal Jose’s movies and Classmates has some terrific songs by Alex Paul. This movie is expected to release on September 1, 2006.

  1. Reminds me of the old hit Sarvakalashala. It was a great movie with superb performances from Lal, Jagathi etc. That was scripted by Cheriyan Kalpakavadi and seemed to be from his own experience.

Lal Jose is one of the best upcoming directors. Achanurangatha Veedu was a classic and Salim Kumar deserved the National Award

  2. Classmates is proving to be the best of the lot from the Onam movies… All the Onam movies that has been released till date are being trashed left and right by the “critics“.. But Classmates is being appreciated, as a feel good movie with an exquisite twist in the climax, with critique appreciation to Lal Jose by all the reviewers..

So one wonders if this is just a one movie wonder by all the youngsters in Malayalam filmdom or the start of their starhood days by these guys and a saturation point of the starhood by M&M??

  3. Waiting for some of you guys in India, probably Unni or Jo, to see the movie and give a review of the movie as an ordinary movie-goer!!

  4. Classmates is a beautiful film which with the help of a really talented directed Lal Jose takes a huge leap ahead of all other onam releases. Great music and picturization had been the trade mark of all Lal Jose films. But the music of Class mates is just average ;and hasnt clicked like the lalJose-vidyasagar combination did! But the story line and direction stands on top!

  5. classmate is a excellent movie. this film is a nostalgia of my life.

  6. IT CAN BE CONSIDERED AS A FANTASTIC MOVIE OF THIS YEAR.A MIXTURE OF COMEDY AND TRAGEDY.THE AFFAIR OF MURALI AND RAZIYA IS PRESENTED IN THE MOVIE IN A VERY TOUCHING MANNER.THE MOVIE ITSELF GIVES YOU A NOSTALGIC FEELING.

  7. Saritha, Why do you have to type everything in Caps Lock Mode?

  8. I feel the movie Classmates has proved that you do not require a superstar to make a movie successful. The story was dealt very adeptly by lal jose and all the lead guys played their part extremely well. May be some scene’s like where Prithviraj expresses his love to Kavya need not be dramatized with a song etc. Jagathy Sreekumar was not utilized properly, Inderjit, Vasu etc acted very well. Overall I would say, it is worth watching once and reviving your college days.
