[...] In the 2005 Kerala State Awards, the film Nottam got noticed for the songs and Saira for Navya Nair’s performance. Both these movies had one thing in common which was not noticed at all - Nedumudi Venu.In Nottam, a film based on Koodiyattam, he played the role of a Chakyar who realizes the immense possibilities for him and his art when he starts a website and conducts a performance tour abroad. In Saira he played the character Ustad Ali Hussain, a ghazal singer. What make it more interesting is the fact that Venu looks like a Chakyar in Nottam and a Ghazal singer in Saira.
[...] Bhavana’s instincts were right and she was recognized for her performance. She also go to do the usual comedy film with Dileep which seems to the highest honour a teenage heroine can get in Kerala these days. For some reason she seemed to get short roles in most of her movies like Thilakkam, Runway, Naran and Udayananu Tharam. The only film makers who gave her serious roles are Kamal in Swapnakoodu and Jayaraj and Aryadan Shoukath in Daivanamathil for which she won the the award for the second best actress [...]

[...] M Jayachandran won the award for the best singer in the Kerala State Awards for 2005 which was a bit surprising for M Jayachandran (not to be confused with P Jayachandran the singer) is best known as a music director. He had composed the songs for the film Nottam and sung the track for one of the songs. The director liked it and decided to retain M Jayachandran’s voice for the song Melle. Chitra won the award for the best female singer for the song Mayangi Poyi in NottamIn an interview he speaks about his influences. “I gave my first vocal recital at the age of 9. My father has always had an abiding passion for Carnatic music, travelling distances just to listen to kutcheris of classical greats, taking me along. This treasure trove of listening experience made for the best lessons I learnt and still draw upon.”His early association with composer M. B. Srinivasan opened up new vistas. “He introduced me to Western classical music. For me, it was a voyage of discovery that broadened my horizons, yet brought me closer to my cultural ethos.” Hindustani music was another addiction. “A confluence of these diverse influences as well as my stint as an apprentice to music director G. Devarajan was later of invaluable help.” [ Catchy amalgam of styles] [...]

[...] As an actress Navya Nair got to play different types of characters in 2005 and for her efforts she won the 2005 Kerala State Award for Best Actress for Saira and Kanne Madanguka. In Saira she played the role of a TV Reporter who undergoes lot of trauma. Orphaned as a result of violence that breaks out on account of a hartal, Saira is abused as a child. However, Saira manages to become a TV news reporter. As she happens to interview an absconding terrorist as part of her work, she becomes the target of the police. Then, amidst a communal flare-up, she is gang-raped. Her trauma does not end there. She is further summoned for interrogation by the police as a prime suspect in a terrorist-related case. Navya Nair has brilliantly portrayed Saira during different stages of her life - as the plucky journalist and as the helpless victim of rape and police harassment. [Caught in the crossfire] [...]
